On this day in 1949, “the people stood up” and Mao Zedong officially declared the establishment of the ??????? (Zh?nghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó) or People’s Republic of China, though it seems to me if one looks at order of the characters, it should be China People’s Republic, or would it be Chinese People’s Republic? Ah, semantics… gotta love ‘em! The National Day celebration is certainly more low-key than Chinese New Year. A few people set off some fire works but otherwise it’s pretty relaxed. Everyone is just happy to have a holiday and take it easy, or, increasingly, travel.
Maybe today would be a good day to read up on the history of the PRC on my favorite resource, Wikipedia.
