In his article, “Micro wind power with a Savonius rotor” Lance Turner tells the tale of how he came to design and build a vertical axis wind turbine generator out of storm water pipe, a long shaft and a windshield wiper motor to open the gate to his home. I love the spirit displayed in the use of very inexpensive materials that could conceivably be at hand. Lance was able to get by on an ingenious device that he just happened to have lying around to step the voltage up to the required 13.8 volts and enable the system to run on only 4 volts of input. The rest of us will have to use a small inverter. The fact that he just happened to have that left over from another project clinches the vote!

Wishing everyone a very happy, healthy, and prosperous Year of the Golden Pig!!

The fireworks in Beijing were amazing as they are every year. We went downstairs just before midnight and it was like a war zone!

Things sure have changed in Beijing over the past four years. The Central Business District (CBD) is nearly complete. Wide roads with actual sidewalks are showing up everywhere. And now kiosks on city corners are displaying posters of nearly naked girls, which have been adorning a host of magazine covers as of late, almost as if there’s an unspoken competition to see who can show the most skin on the cover. I’ve marveled at this phenomenon looking at magazine racks at 7-11, also a new addition to the Beijing landscape and now nearly as ubiquitous as in any other metropolis, but this was the first time I saw one of the magazine covers blown up to this size. Makes me wonder who will top this…
